Getting Started

The Search to be Understood

First – Schedule a Phone Consultation

My counseling process begins with a phone consultation. During this time, I’ll have you share why you are seeking counseling, and we will discuss the options available to address your problem/issues. This is not a counseling session, but instead is a time to see if we are a good fit.

Please fill out the contact form on this page, and I will reach out to you to schedule a suitable time for a 15-minute complimentary phone consultation. I do consultations Mondays through Fridays.

If we determine together to move forward, we will schedule a counseling appointment.

I am licensed to do counseling in Arizona and New York. I am able to offer coaching in other states. There is a distinct difference between the two, and I can go into the details of the differences when we talk if that is of interest to you.

Second – Complete Client Paperwork

Once we have your first appointment scheduled, I’ll send you an email with links to your New Client Paperwork. For your convenience, all the required client paperwork will be completed online. I ask for these to be completed within 48 hours so I can begin reviewing everything and prepare for our first session.  I find this makes our first appointment more productive.

Third – Arrive Early

I suggest clients plan to arrive early for their appointment so they can settle in and take a breath before our session begins. Try to log in at least five minutes before our scheduled time to make sure you have no problems connecting and that your audio works. If you find your audio is not working, check to see if you have a Bluetooth connection sending the sound to a different device. Please text me if you are unable to log in.

Fourth – During the Session

Be sure to consider your comfort during our sessions. It can be helpful to have water or another beverage within reach. Some clients like to have a pet nearby. You will also want to ensure you have privacy and that doors are closed so other residents or co-workers cannot hear our discussion. Many of my clients take notes during the session as I do a lot of psychoeducation and we’ll talk about strategies. Clients find they want to have a way to remember these things. You may want to have a journal, notebook, or your computer to take notes for yourself.

Arcadia/Scottsdale/Metropolitan Phoenix Clients

Counseling appointments are available online Mondays through Wednesdays. Although our counseling is primarily conducted online, sometimes we may need to meet in person in a public setting to practice the ERP skills you are learning.

Arizona (outside of Maricopa County) Clients

Online appointments are available Mondays through Wednesdays. Arizona clients can be booked from 9 am through the 5 pm hour.

New York City and New York State Clients

Online appointments are available Mondays through Wednesdays. NYC & NYS clients have the advantage of being two or three hours ahead and are able to schedule evening appointments. (My office is located in Arizona, and Arizona does not change time.) During EDT or summer – appointments can be booked for NYC & NYS clients up through the 8 pm hour. During EST or winter – appointments for NYC or NYS clients can be booked through the 7 pm hour.

Fees & Payments

Complimentary initial phone consultation about 15 – 20 minutes.

Fees for psychotherapy, counseling, and coaching sessions are $150 for 50 minutes and are payable at the time of service.

I do not take insurance for a number of reasons. First, I believe it is important for my clients to get the most effective counseling and also have full privacy throughout the therapeutic process. By providing private payment, you will have privacy since I am not obligated to provide your insurance company with sensitive information about you or our counseling sessions.

Also, managed care companies often dictate the number of sessions allowed and I believe that should be a decision you and I make together. Insurance benefits typically can only be used to treat illness, requiring a diagnosis of a mental health disorder. This becomes a part of your permanent medical record and could be used when applying for life insurance, disability claims, pistol permits, etc.

Sometimes insurance companies will partially reimburse for out-of-network providers after an annual deductible has been met. If you wish to invite your managed care company into our therapeutic relationship, I can provide you with a receipt (including diagnostic information, if necessary) so you can file for reimbursement. Please note you are responsible for the full payment of your session fee at the time of your appointment and any reimbursement you are seeking needs to be negotiated between you and your insurance company. I do not interact with insurance companies.

I accept cash, debit, credit card, or HSA. I take Visa, Mastercard, Discover, and American Express. I do require clients keep a Credit Card Authorization Form on file to cover late cancellation and no-show fees. I require 24-hour cancellation or the amount of the full session will be charged.

I am contracted with Modern Health as a counselor. If your company offers an EAP through Modern Health, you can request me as your counselor. Your company has a specific number of counseling sessions allocated as a part of their benefits.
